Born in 1829 in Hanover, Westphalia, Germany, Peter Schurfeld legally immigrated to these United States of America in 1859 with his wife Hannah and their two young children, Peter and Anna. Upon arrival, he served a term in the Union army in South Carolina to gain citizenship for himself and his family. He spent the rest of his life working and raising his family in Quincy, Illinois and died in 1899.
I have assembled this site from the best of my ability, relying on a set of notes I found among the things of my grandmother Irene and a verbal account over the years from her daughter and my mother, Carlene. I had much help from Shirley Hyatt (Cheboygan, Michigan) and Donna Lewis (Quincy, IL) on the Lampe side of the family.
